I played it somewhat recently on a whim though not because of the remake.

>Did it hold up?
Im gonna say YES. Mostly. It's got some issues, but I think there's one thing it does very, very well. If nothing else, it's VERY good at keeping the player in the know of what they're doing and why it's important all without hammering us over the head with a bunch of stupid as fuck bullshit.

You know right off the bat who Avalanche and Shinra are. You know why you need to stop them. You know who all our heroes are and what they're about. You know who Sephiroth is and why he's bad. You basically get an idea of what Jenova is but know why she's bad. You know who the Ancients are, you know what materia is, you know what the weapons are.

I think this part of what helped make it so popular (After the HUGE add push) it's all very digestible. There's some plot issues, but you have a very strong forward sense of momentum as you chase the bad guy and every action you take (Outside of getting distracted by chocobos) has a clear and obvious goal or significance.

>Look unnatural
Meanwhile fuckhuge sword looks even fuck huger. And once again, just because they SAY it's bound doesn't mean it actually is because, and I can't stress this enough, SHE'S NOT REAL. That's all just BS to justify it.

The more I look back at it the more I think that, while it's not my favorite, it's one of the easiest examples to point to to explain what makes a game like this actually work.

The story is straight forward but has some turns here and there. You know who all the good guys and bad guys are, their motivations and why they need to be stopped.

There's a lot of side content and room to explore off the beaten path of the main quest.

The main characters are mature enough to appeal to casuals who might not want to play as kids, but also far from overly serious and have a lot of weird quirks and idioms spread out between them and have stark visual differences in a line up.

FF7 does address this though. Only one in the party knows Cloud so there's no reason for them to doubt his word and the one person who does know him, Tifa, does realize that something is amiss in his story.

It's not the cleanest twist but it was foreshadowed and it does make sense and it is actually treated like a huge character changing ideal compared to FF8's "Oh."
