I just replaced all of the internal batteries in my NES/SNES collection. Everything went well, but something weird happened with a few of them. In most cases the save data was deleted after I took the battery out, but in a few games (Kirby's Adventure, StarTropics, Super Mario Kart, and F-1 ROC II) the save file somehow survived the battery change. In each case the RAM chips went a good 30 seconds or so without power while I swapped the battery out. How is it even possible for the save files to have survived this? Has this happened to anyone else?

You mean the battery died. CR2032, typically. You can get them replaced.
