I'd rather have real ports to /vr/ hardware.

Sonic Jam is the way I play Sonic games nowadays.
It does have some issues, particularly in Sonic 2 with some extra slowdown, but I can excuse that since these weren't emulated but actual ports to the Saturn hardware, Sonic 1 and 3&K play flawelessly, and my favorite thing about it is the time trial modes. I've played the Sonic games too much as a kid I know them by heart, so picking any act from any zone I want to play in any order and try to beat my old time score is always a fun way to play some Sonic for 30 minutes or an hour every now and then.

>Any Neo Geo games (King of Fighters, Metal Slug, etc.) or Capcom fighting games (Street Fighter, any of the Vs. games), just play on MAME as the emulation is 99.9% accurate and runs much better than the Saturn ports.

Stuff like Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Vampire Savior is pretty much arcade perfect as far as performance and frames go.
I mean yeah, if you want, just emulate, but the japanese Saturn versions of fighting games aren't expensive and still good.
Saturn ports of SNK are much better than Neo Geo CD ports, for the loading time alone, so there's that as well.

That sonic genesis collection doesn't even allow you to use the lock-on feature between Sonic 3&Knuckles and Sonic 2 & Knuckles.

It has a lot of genesis games but as other people pointed out, it's all emulation, kinda pointless when Kega Fusion and even Picodrive on PSP/PS3 work so well.

But as far as retro Sonic compilations go, pic related is the one to go. Actual ports of the games to the Saturn hardware, nice extra modes like time trials and bonus stage trial, spindash in Sonic 1, plus a shitload of extra contents and the Sonic World 3D hub.

That sonic ultimate collection doesn't even let you lock on sonic 3 with Sonic & Knuckles, how the fuck is it ultimate?

This collection it's better. No ROMs, actual ports.
Sonic 2 has a bit of slowdown, but everything else is perfect.

They were actually ports to the Saturn hardware as everyone says? The article on wikipedia says [citation needed].

the only collections I bought were this, Mother 1+2 for GBA and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles for PSP.

I pirated Sonic Gems Collection on PS2, mainly to play Sonic CD but the port was really bad.

I only have 2 collection games: Sonic Jam and Castlevania dracula X chronicles

Sonic Jam isn't really a ROM collection because the games are actually ported and run on the Saturn hardware, so this is cool, only let down is that this version of Sonic 2 suffers from slowdowns and sometimes it glitches out in some parts if you do certain things, but nothing game-breaking.
On its favor it has time attack for all games, spindash in Sonic 1 and a fuckton of extras, including the Sonic World minigame.

Castlevania DXC is actually a remake of Rondo, but it includes the original Rondo of Blood and Symphony fo the Night, both emulated (actually, I'd think SOTN runs natively since the PSP can run PS1 games, but not sure). This version of SOTN also includes a new translation and 2 familiars that were in the original japanese release but taken out of the western one, and also playable Maria, with all-new moveset and specials different from her Saturn version.

But the main reason I bought those was because of the new content (remake in Castlevania, Sonic World in Sonic Jam + curiosity to see how the ports on Saturn run... mostly it's the same as Genesis, except Sonic 2 as I said which suffers framdrops sometimes. It's great to play them with the Saturn pad though).

I pirated Sonic Gems Collection (PS2) and was disappointed. Bad port of Sonic CD, and overall it felt cheap, like I could just play them emulated on the PC and it'd be just the same.

He's probably using an emulator with a 360 controller or something.
By the sounds of it he might be experiencing some input lag, besides obviously being bad at a level entry platformer like Sonic.

The atrocious port of Sonic 1 on the GBA didn't include spindash, the only official port that includes an (optional) spindash was in Sonic Jam for the Saturn, which is actually a pretty good collection.

Sonic Jam is commonly regarded as the best classic Sonic compilation

-actual port to the Saturn hard, not emulation
-cool game menu with 3D models of the carts (you can even make them lock on with the S&K cart)
-customization for each game which includes: difficulty setting (only "Easy" or "Normal", with "Original" being what the name implies and the default setting, sadly no hard mode but Normal is interesting as levels have a different structure in some parts, mostly to help players whos truggle with the physics though, so they added more platforms, easy is the same but there's like only 1 or 2 levels per zone), time trial (just like in Sonic CD, race against time and beat your records in each act), Sonic 1 even has the option to enable spindash! You can lock the Sonic 1 cart to S&K and play the blue ball bonus stage game just like in the original hard.
-the whole instruction manuals in their entirety from the cover to the back cover, in high resolution with easy zoom controls, you will be able to read and see everything in detail. (Both Japanese and American versions of the booklets are included on the disc! -EU in PAL-)
-"Sonic World" the 3D hubworld for all the extras in the game. This is actually a novelty because you can consider this a prototype of what a Saturn Sonic by Yuji Naka would have been potentially. You see X-Treme was being developed in America, but Yuji Naka was working back in Japan at the time, Naka had to decide whether to make a new Sonic game for the Saturn, or a completely new IP. Being a native creator he opted for the new IP, but Sonic World is at least a demonstration of what could have been. And actually controls pretty well, I think if polished could have been a very interesting 3D platformer, the sense of classic Sonic speed was there but it wasn't excesive like in Adventure and all the other games that came after. This hubworld has a few mini-games, and the area is maybe 1/3 of a level of Banjo-Kazooie in size.. (cont)

S3&K is the best game, but kind of cheating because you needed to buy 2 carts in order to properly play it.

So, I say, as a standalone game, my favorite is Sonic 2 and Sonic CD (tie), and if we count lock-on, Sonic 3 & Knuckles it is.

By the way, I understand how most people don't like Sonic CD because it's a bit different from the rest... but actually once you understand how to play it (go to the past, etc), it's one of the most immersive Sonic experiences I think
