Yes they did. Sailor Moon was a popular kids show in the mid 90s before even Pokemon and Toonami. "Japanimation" was a term used before "anime" was widely used, it was marketed on TV and it's when anime was becoming a thing in the US, the Scifi channel used to air anime blocks in the early 90s. Anime OVAs became notorious for being "those bloody cartoons with sex" everybody heard about. If you hung out at the shopping mall, you went to Suncoast video, and you saw all the anime shit. Shit like Akira and Ghost in the Shell was very popular. Whether you were a little kid, a teen, or an adult nerd and didn't live in a fucking amish cult....you knew of anime.
