OP could have a VA4 Model 2 for all we know. I've got half a dozen knocking about and they're decent.

The Model 2 Genesis consoles were known for their crappy sound quality. It depends on the guts it has inside. Pic related.

Some of the later Model 2's had a revised motherboard that was smaller than the earlier ones and they output the best video and the audio is arguably on par with the Model 1.

Or you can get a 3/4 board Model 2, like mine. Most collectors agree they are up to par with the early Model 1 in terms of audio and video. Problem is that they're hard to find, but I was able to find one by asking various sellers on eBay to check the underside of the system and tell me wether or not there was a roughly 1" gap next to the metal plate. A lot of people getting rid of Model 2 genesis units don't know that the 3/4 board model is more valuable.

A good Model 2 is easy to identify too, and they are pretty much as good as a HDG Model 1.

Only the early Model 2 Genesis consoles had shitty sound. The later versions fixed the sounds. You have to check the vent on the bottom of the console and see if it has the shorter metal shielding inside.
