The biggest thing against it is the constant problem of having to go into the start menu and change around your weapon and equipment for every enemy you encounter. The game really needs something like the quick select weapon ring from drakengard.

Are the bosses in this game supposed to be tanky as fuck or am I missing something? Even with an effective weapon/spell, all I can do is chip away at them and hope I don't fuck up the defense counters too many times

Alright, so I bought this game pretty shortly after it was released back in the day and have yet to actually beat it. Every time I restart the game I end up being turned off by just how convoluted everything is and eventually reaching a point where I'll run into a boss and do 0 damage to it over and over.

I'm promising myself that this is the last chance I'm giving the game. I know there's a lot of fans of the game here so I need some of you experts to tell me how to actually play this fucking thing without grinding or having to be overly autistic, swapping weapons every two seconds. Is there some easier way to get through this game? What's the best magic to use? Give me some good rules of thumb to follow so I don't pull my hair out from tedium and frustration.

Why don't people talk about this anymore? Why wasn't it massively influential?

I know it was a commercial failure but plenty of games that were failures have had a massive influence on everything even remotely similar that followed. System Shock comes to mind.

It's like Matsuno played a bunch of Nihon Falcom games and decided to show them how much better he could do it.

This game is cool, but taxing emotionally. They throw you into a sea of information immediately. It's not that hard to pick up, but it's one of those games that always has you thinking you might be doing something inefficiently.

The atmosphere is extremely oppressive, though in an aesthetically pleasing way. There is a dire feeling to everything, reminiscent of Valkyrie Profile.

I've always enjoyed it, but only now in my third time trying to play it have I gotten very far. If the save file "map" percentage is an indicator of progress, I'm 12% through the game. Just beat the golem boss. Still haven't figure out why my combos aren't chaining after 1.

Thoughts?

So I just started playing this game. Just beat the minotaur at the end of the first stage. And doesn't this game seem completely flawed to anyone else? I mean, I can pretty much attack endlessly without much of a response? And there's no strategy involved. The best strategy seems to be "be near an enemy and tap circle as fast as possible". Does it get more nuanced/difficult or is it like this the whole time?
