This, and also we've lived through a military dictatorship. It was a leaning to right dictatorship to stop the gommies, but it was pretty much left in economy.

The government controlled the economy and caused a lot of disasters that we're going through up to today.

But the thing is... to create incentives to national industry, you need to manufacture stuff here in Brazil, it was hard/didn't worth to import.

So a lot of these companies would clone hardware because that was the best way to sell here.

That only changed after the dictatorship fell and president Collor was elected in the 90's, again, for fear of communists... since he went against Lula.

Collor opened up the economy/imports, so these clones started to disappear from the market and the original stuff started to replace them.

TecToy and Playtronic (which was owned by Gradiente, I believe), used import the chips and "mount" everything here. I believe that Gradiente produced GameCubes here, but stopped, since most brazilians just played PS2.

So, it's not so simple. But the clones were our only option because of the dictatorship. They were dumb as a fuck, but at least they stopped communism.

Brazilian people and american people aren't that different, but we only had fucked up governments here. Things started to change from 94 and forward with Fernando Henrique, but Lula got elected in 2002 which fucked everything again.
