Nothing. It's best castlemania by far.

>>8751657
The inverted castle works because it fixes a common problem in metroidvanias where you get all your cool upgrades and the game is already over before you can have fun using them. It's also cool as fuck.

The gameplay in SOTN is very good despite its lack of difficulty. Wing smash and gravity boots give you very satisfying, fast movement. Most weapons are varied and have additional attacks mapped to quarter circle and back forward motions. The level design of the castle as a whole makes it very fun to explore and navigate.

>>8751719
I like SOTN for the gameplay.

>>8751720
The map being so cumbersome to open literally makes it unplayable

>>8753839
It can.

Anon, if not playing the game as it is designed to be played is a requirement for you to consider it good on your terms, then it is NOT good on your terms.

Which is fine, that doesn't make the game bad. Most of the criticism of this game comes from not being what some wanted it to be, not actually from a failure to be what it does actually attempt (quite successfully) to be.

Pedantic fun fact:

The PS1 doesn't actually support 2D in the traditional sense of using dedicated hardware for sprites like the SNES & Saturn had. 2D on the PS1 is done by displaying front-facing flat textured polygons. Technically, the PS1 doesn't have "2D games" (this is dumb but I did say it would be pedantic). This is also how modern graphics APIs like OpenGL & Vulkan do 2D. It's just faster when you're using modern GPUs that are all optimized for 3D.

Here's a decent example on the PS1:

>Symphony of the Night received wide critical acclaim at the time of its release. Critics lauded the massive, free-to-explore game world with its numerous secrets to uncover, and praised the game for integrating role-playing elements without compromising the series' basic gameplay.
>Despite the popular consensus of the time that 2D had become outmoded, critics also highly praised the game's graphics for their smooth animation, impressive effects, and evocation of atmosphere.
>Initially, the game's commercial performance was mediocre, particularly in the United States where it was meagerly publicized, but thanks to praise by critics, it gained sales through word-of-mouth and became a hit. The PlayStation and Saturn versions sold 225,862 units in Japan, while the PlayStation version sold 477,304 units in the United States, for a total of 703,166 units sold in the United States and Japan.

I haven't gotten deep into specifically arcade games, but playing the Wild Guns remaster, Contra 4, Nex Machina, and the little shmups in the Retro Game Challenge series, I just keep playing them over and over. For the most part, every try is "the run" because even if I end up in a place where I'm doomed, I can still just keep going as far as I can so I can get better acquainted with what I'll be seeing later or further reinforce my ability in a level I know. At a certain point of familiarity though, I will start giving into my urges of just restarting when a run seems like a lost cause.

I've never really understood the vitriol some people have for save state practice, even if I don't do it (yet). 1CCing a game is the vidya equivalent of playing a song from sheet music - the point isn't how you got to being able to play the whole thing, the point is building the mastery for the day that you do play the whole thing (and then, once you know it, interpreting it and making it your own by playing for score).
