Also, not everyone had the soundcard to support it at the time. That fueled the "horror" angle for the game by a lot, especially when you're some 90s person turning around to find a pinkie eating you for the first time.
Then some tracks are amazing at building some atmosphere.

I honestly have no idea, it's so long ago, and I was so young when I started playing vidya, that it could have been a number of different ones. Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 are probable, but not definite, could just as well have been Duck Hunt, Tom & Jerry, TMNT, Batman, Megaman, or Fester's Quest. We had maybe 28 games for the NES

>favorite game
I'm typically bad at picking favorites, but I'll say Doom with confidence. Doom and Doom 2 are great games at their cores, as well as what people have made with them in all these years, as well as what I can make for it myself.
Fun gameplay, and a great heavy metal/horror aesthetic which has just always appealed to me.

>favorite series (all retro games in series combined)
I guess I'll say Doom, as I really like the expansions too, and spinoffs like Doom 64.
I even like Doom 3, in spite of its flaws (some which are considerable). The uh, new Doom games are pretty ok I guess, but they could be a lot better. There's however many other games and series I'm very fond of, many mentioned in this thread as well. Things like Duke Nukem 3D, Diablo, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate, Super Mario 64, and various Castlevania games.

I kind of don't have one, unless you count PC. I've had a lot of consoles which I've had a lot of fun with, but they've largely had their pros and cons. NES, Gameboy, N64, GBA, PS2, and PS3, have all been very good to me over the years. Never had a SNES, but emulation let me catch up on that and it's been a lot of good times.

>Favorite Game
Good old fashioned Doom, be it just the base vanilla game, Doom 64, or all kinds of level sets and mods, ranging from small changes to gameplay overhauls.
Doom at its core is very fun and entertaining, and it's easily malleable to adapt for a lot of different approaches, which gives it a huge amount of extra mileage.

Coming up on 22 years of Doom in 2021, and it's by far the game that is dearest to me, besides the gameplay I also love the aesthetics and atmosphere, all the graphics and sound design, all the music (both the ripped off tracks and the original compositions, I love the music it rips off as well). I also love to make levels and work on mods for it.

I haven't played Dusk or any of those "boomer shooters", but a lot I think look kind of meh. I like Doom a lot because aside from its rock solid core gameplay, good level design, and hugely versatile bestiary, along with its supreme capacity for being modded, it has a lot of styles and aesthetics to it that I love, and which most of the fan works stick to in one way or another:
>Heavy metal album cover monsters and designs
>Medieval gothic fantasy stuff with a lot of the stereotypical satanic and demonic imagery, lots of gargoyles, and lots of that weird pale green marble, either as just bricks, or as elaborate wall reliefs and pillars, providing detailed trims to rooms and hallways
>Horror movie monsters and lots of detailed (not necessarily realistic) gore, demons which are also cybernetic organisms, cyborgs, surreal locations which in themselves are made out of living flesh
>Sci-fi action movie stuff, things which look futuristic and advanced, like the body armor, space bases, plasma guns, and massive computer arrays, but also a lot of used future stuff, a lot of stuff which looks like it would just be horribly obsolete for such an advanced setting, yet keeps getting used, because it works well enough (just because it's the future doesn't mean buckshot doesn't still put a man six feet under)
>Music based in heavy metal, rock, grunge, high tempo stuff made to get you pumped to fight monsters, and even heavy synthy stuff, along with tense and foreboding atmospheric themes to get you, well, tense
