It plays a lot like rail shooter Panzer Dragoon games. The mecha designs in Omega Boost are done by Kawamori Shoji who does the mecha design for Macross and Escaflowne. Firing missiles out has similar light trails and spread as done in Macross too. It is one of the most visually appealing polygon based games on the original Playstation, showing off the artistry and expertise of the same team that does Gran Turismo. So give it a try I prefer the Japanese intro song.

It is linear, but still a great experience. Living off the hype of being one of the most impressive Tokyo Game Show titles in its year of release, I had to get the game. It is impressive to watch as well as play fitting an arcade style game which I like.

If I could earn enough, I'd like to go back to Japan, especially with the favorable exchange rate with the US dollars. I've been meaning to get the PCE and Saturn Macross games, but I've no idea if I'd want the Famicom one.

We were burning on the edge of something beautiful. Tech Romancer has different designer do each giant robot. It is pretty obvious which one is Kawamori Shoji's in that game.

I remember it was the game of Tokyo Game Show and was so hyped for the game's release. Always wanted a sequel to the game, but Polyphony got really busy making only Gran Turismo games. Only relatively recently I learned the intro was different per region, and I still prefer the Japanese one best as that was what I am most familiar with and seems to fit the rhythm/flow of the game best to me: https://youtu.be/ROPCD5Vm6b8

Give Omega Boost a try. The mecha designer is the same one that did Macross. In fact, he also did one of the characters in Kikaioh as well.

I highly recommend Omega Boost. The mechanical designs are from the same designer as those from Macross. The missile shots/streaks are pretty reminiscent of the series too.

I was going to post Omega Boost as well, but the intro I remember had a different song, which fits to me and is odd seeing that version you posted. It may be nostalgia and my memories, but I feel this version fits it better: https://youtu.be/ROPCD5Vm6b8

Everything mentioned so far does either mecha or giant robots well. I am a bit surprised no one mentioned Armored Core or Omega Boost yet. I am still a fan of the Virtual On games, but even that has to latch onto the To Aru series to stay alive these days.

Gundam W: Endless Duel is a pretty fun mech fighting game. I liked the Two-Mix music back then.

Most of my favorites have already been named already: Virtual-On, Musha, Gundam W: Endless Duel, Omega Boost, Bulk Slash, Macross: Scramble Valkyrie, Xenogears, Cyberbots, Metalstorm, Assault Suit, Kikaioh, Custom Robo, Front Mission, Armored Core, Bangaio, Bari-Arm. there's just so many good ones. Do you make a distinction between mecha and giant robots?

I think Scramble Valkyrie is pretty good. Also I feel Omega Boost has the spirit too.

I think Tyokou Senki Kikaioo uses the same engine as Rival Schools. If you don't mind losing the school setting, it is pretty nice too. The designs of each mech were done by different designers to reflect different mech/robot shows. For example, the Macross-like robot in the game was designed by the same person who did the mecha designs for Omega Boost!

Yeah, so many stories of getting friends an people from across the hall all coming in to play Goldeneye to a skill level where everyone is purposely staring at walls to not give away their location to the other players next to you. Creating RAM drives across the network housing all the games (and maybe viruses) that everyone can find, but not the administrators. Going to the arcades, Lazer Tag at midnight, calling in friends from all around settling the rides/transportation, visiting local dumps for the bands. It was amazing.

I remember back in 1998, Omega Boost stole the show at the Tokyo Game Show for the Japanese press, overshadowing the Dreamcast. It was pretty hype with the kids as it combined the mech designs of Kawamori Syozi, of Macross fame, with development by Polyphony Digital, of Gran Tursmo fame. It was impressive graphically and another in the line of great rail shooters like Panzer Dragoon and Starfox, but it faked a sense of freedom in movement very well. I think they unfortunately changed the campyness of its FMVs and music that I loved in the Japanese version when localized to the US. I am surprised no one has mentioned the game yet, as it is more Macross than most Macross games.

I also like Kikaioh or Tech Romancer for using different mechanical designers for each robot or mecha imitations.
