For me it's gonna be always Double Dragon II.
Great stages, music and cutscenes.

This series never really had a consistent art style (they couldn't even get Billy and Jimmy's hair/outfit colors consistent between games), but I always thought this poster had the definite depiction of Marian to me.

Double Dragon II was better than I on both, arcade and NES. The GBA version is also underrated.

Yeah, but you lose some of her delicious thighs. On that note, I like how all the console ports of Double Dragon II: The Revenge used this same illustration, but they might as well had been completely different games.

It's because Marian doesn't even have a single consistent design throughout the series. In the first arcade game she's this somewhat plumpy brunette in a little red dress with a weird face. She looks more or less the same in the second arcade game, but her face is much better drawn there (despite the weird yellow palette).

But on the flyer for the second game, she's this superhot blonde bombshell in a tank top and miniskirt, and her design in the second NES port seems to be based more on that. Most of the remakes (like Double Dragon Advance and iOS/Android version) seems to be based on this design while having her wear the red dress from the arcade game, which kinda makes her look a bit too much like Jessica from Final Fight (despite Marian debuting first).

But then you also have the gang leader version from the Neo-Geo version (see >>8310369), the redhead version from the Game Boy port of the first game and the policewoman version from Return of Double Dragon who never actually shows up in the game, but is only drawn in the manual (because they rushed the game before putting the story). And the new version in River City Girls seems to be a Blaze Fielding ripoff.

I doubt Nintendo had anything to do with that just because the game was on their console. I think Technos just wanted a happier version since the arcade version has a rather brief and somewhat unsatisfying ending.

The NES port of the first game also changed the plot by turning Jimmy Lee into the bad guy because they didn't know how to work a 2-players mode on the NES, reducing Machine Gun Willy (the main bad guy in the arcade version) into his lackey.

It's pretty awesome Technos got a bondage manga artist to do the flyer art for Double Dragon II.

There happens to be several options available to you.

Every console has a top 10 list. If you only like a certain type of game then never fear there is a list for your preference. If 10 isn't enough then how about 20? 30? 50? 100? The sky is the limit friend.

Secondly after the nintendpopcalypse the best place to pick up roms is torrents, but that's risky. On the other hand there is still sites out there that still have roms, but you have to shop around before you finally find a decent site.

Emulators, by contrast, are easy to get. just search up your console of choice and pick the one you like most. If you pick a shitty one try again.

If you want actual hardware pawn shops and thrift stores are great places... But you wont always find something every time you go. You may not find anything at all sometimes. But if you are feeling lucky you might find something.

Finally I've always loved Mega Man. Make of that what you will.

Its hard to imagine today that Double Dragon was as popular as it was. Remember that it even got a movie in the 90's alongside Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat. Though of course, beat 'em ups in general had started to disappear by the time Double Dragon did.

But why did they switched hair colors in the NES version? And why did the blond one became a bad guy in the NES version? And if Marian is Billy's girlfriend and Billy's the blue guy, how come she's cheating on him with Jimmy on the cover of Double Dragon II? Isn't she supposed to be dead in the sequel? How come she stays dead in the arcade version but comes back to life on the NES?

I always wanted to be Billy Lee on the cover of Double Dragon II. Or was that Jimmy? Whoever the hell is holding Marian like that. They never could keep their hair colors straight.

I can't speak for Double Dragon 1 & 2, but the PS4 Arcade Archives of Contra is actually better emulated than it is on MAME (at least the last time I've played). From my understanding, M2 actually handled some of the PS4 Arcade Archives conversions, but I'm not sure if they specifically worked on the Technos ones.
