Not a game, but the 3DO in general deserves more respect than most people give it. By coincidence it just happens to be "the Gex console"

You might like the 3DO. It's basically like what a Neptune CD would've been, only without the SEGA part obviously. It has a lot of the same games from both SEGA CD and 32X though and came out smack dab in between them in 1993

I think he is talking about the SEGA CD slot, there was almost a floppy drive add-on though

I've grown a sort of fondness towards the Panasonic 3DO. It's easy to write off as obsolete e-waste since it has a lot of silly shovelware FMV games, a lot of its best titles were ported over to PS1, and a few were also ported to Saturn, but the fact that it basically came out in the middle of fourth gen is what interests me more.

It also shares a lot of similarities with my favorite system, the SEGA CD, even down to its controller. It's like they saw what SEGA was doing and wanted to make something similar but more powerful, even if neither of them ended up very successful in the long run.

N64 had GameShark, I had one as a kid and it rocked

You say this without ever playing a CDI game

Can call any console bad without actually playing it to see whether or not it's actually bad. Some of my favorite consoles are the "bad" ones. Saturn is kind of close to this category anyway

Black one looks better imo.

For me, probably TurboDuo and 3DO FZ-10. JVC X'Eye also looks pretty nice

>released in 1993
>better graphics and sound than both SNES and Genesis
>best rail shooters of its time period (1993-1996)
>enhanced soundtracks for Bust-A-Move, Soccer Kid, and SSFII Turbo
>IT'S TAIL TIME!
Why haven't you played 3DO yet, /vr/?

This is a very strange console. I finally got around to emulating it.

Pros:
>Best version of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (imo)
>Excellent port of Samurai Shodown as well
>Excellent rail shooters (especially Burning Soldier, Starblade, and Total Eclipse)
>Platformer selection is surprisingly good
>Adult games are a fun quirk, even if they're bad

Cons:
>Almost nothing else besides shovelware

The racing games are okay, nothing spectacular (I enjoyed Road Rash on SEGA CD more, oddly). I have yet to try the FPS games, some of the other FMV games like Strahl, or Lucienne's Quest. The JP/KO exclusives I played so far were all pretty bad. Any recommendations for 3DO?

I owned mostly Nintendo consoles (+ Genesis and PS1) growing up, but there are a whole bunch of consoles and handhelds I never owned, so emulation and retro handhelds allow me to do that using the original controller on my TV (or original form factor for handhelds). Most of what I play now is stuff I missed out on growing up, but occasionally if I'm in the mood I'll go for a round of Crash 2, DKC2, or Mega Man X. It's fun to research all of the platforms I never owned and learn about what made them special and different from the others.

>Any good new (to you) games that blew you away recently?
The last game that did that was probably The Terminator on SEGA CD. The system in general is phenomenal, so many great shmups and other games that really impressed me on it

It has a lot more than just those. Lots of rail shooters, racing games, other fighting games (32X's own Primal Rage, nearly arcade perfect Samurai Shodown and Sailor Moon come to mind), puzzlers like og Bust-A-Move with remixed music. A lot more than just Gex and FMV games, just like SEGA CD is more than just Sonic and FMV games. Heck it even has a Policenauts port, so it at least has some merit

The thing I realized is that the 3DO wasn't really competing with the PS1 and Saturn, but with the SEGA CD itself. They shared a lot of games, especially the FMV-heavy ones like Starblade and Dragon's Lair, but they actually ended up performing better on the 3DO due to the more powerful hardware. Interesting that it was sandwiched between the SEGA CD and 32X as well, almost like a would-be SEGA CD 2 or something. I can't help but be fascinated in this system for that reason alone

Never thought much of this system, but after playing a bunch of SEGA CD games over the past two years and seeing its parallels with that system's library, it makes me more interested in trying some of the games out. Seems to have a lot of good rail shooters like Burning Soldier and Starblade (also one of my favorite SEGA CD games). What does /vr/ think of 3DO? What are your favorite titles on it?
