GAW suffers from being done with a bigger budget, but with SEGA quallity of its time.
So everything is poorly implemented or janky, which hurts a lot.

Its still worth playing, as its a experience. But its also the kind of game where you walk into a bossfight of some huge enemy, only for the actual battle to be about dying from contact damage.

Yeah, that is the thing.
Its not.
Its the same with Zelda 1 vs the few clones we get in the same era. Like WIllow or Golden Axe Warrior.

Gameplay being tight and polished means you can actually play the game, instead of cursing the fake learning curve that comes from the jank.

It's not really that much more linear. Remember that Zelda I required items like the raft and the candle to reach certain locations. It's the same kind of logic with Zelda II. If you want, you can duck into early palaces long enough to collect quest items, then use those items to move ahead to later regions and palaces. In fact, you can clear the palaces in literally any order you can think of.

I think Zelda is great. I actually wish it had more clones and other alike games so that I could have more of the same without it being strictly the same.

I like pic-related and recommend it to anyone who has done Zelda and wants a completely new quest.
I recommend it to anyone in general, actually. It's good.

Golden Axe Warrior was perhaps better than Zelda in some ways. But I never see it mentioned on /vr/. Maybe because SMS didn't gain that much market share in the U.S.
