Can't forget about the entire Wild Arms series.
While it's not retro, 3 has the heaviest western aesthetic of the franchise.

You could play Wild Arms 1-3 and stop after the character intros, which are each about 20-30 minutes.

I suppose the series ended on a high note with Wild Arms 5, but I certainly wouldn't say no to a new one.

I personally haven't played one worse than Wild Arms 2. It's apparently a very literal translation, meaning all the Japanese nuances get lost with it. It's because of the bad translation that the script became ambiguous enough to make people think Brad might be gay. Word of God says otherwise on that though.

The Wild Arms series if you're willing to give a Teriyaki Western RPG a shot. Although if you want the MOST western experience from that series, get Wild Arms 3 for PS2, where all party members use guns and the entre planet is an Arizona-like desert.

I've been very slowly chipping away at WA2 over the past couple of months. I've just about reached end-game and I wanna tackle some of the crystal bosses, but first I need to grind levels. How can I score some quick exp?

Nobody's mentioned Wild Arms yet, so definitely those. This includes 1 & 2 for PS1, and while not retro, 3 & 5 on PS2 are recommended too.
