No reason we can't, just gotta talk.

I'd say it's closer to 60% to 80%, /vr/ has its ups and downs and I think people get more or less insular depending on the times. People do talk Quake there plenty though, occasionally basically the entire thread gets absorbed by Quake discussion, particularly when there's some major release of something.

It's Doom centric, but all these shooters are relevant to most people there. Quake and Blood map packs have been made, and there's a Shadow Warrior one slowly brewing.

I like both.

Those are also really good.
ROTT and Blood I mean, not so much the death part.

The color palette has little to do with disk space. Muted earth tones were a deliberate design choice and one which is suitable for the gothic horror locales they were going for. That said, Quake has a lot of color at times.

Quake has arguably more color variety because it goes for many different dark colors, Doom 2's are a much more narrow selection in large part.

I love the dirty and grimy dark gothic dungeons in that game. The textures are gorgeous.

You think people waited expectantly for Duke Nukem Forever for no good reason? Duke Nukem 3D was a fantastic game, and people wanted more, which is why DNF being such an unappologetic thunderturd pissed people off a lot.

>>7919085
Don't be a nigger, Quake was a fantastic game, and can very well measure up to Duke 3D.

>fully 3D, complete with real room over room, bridges, water, walls and floors at any angle you could imagine, even enemies and projectiles were 3D
>it was all software 3D, too and could have as complex level architecture as it did for the time due to very smart culling/optimizing (Binary Space Partitioning, also used in Doom)
>the game was fast; the player is fast, the monsters are fast, the projectiles are fast, the traps are fast, the fighting was fast, and the online multiplayer was fast (ridiculously fast, even)
>had enjoyable level design, maps looked cool, were fun to explore, had great atmosphere, lots of secrets to discover, and had clever combat encounters
>monsters all had their own behavior, there's basic grunt gunmen in the intro levels for each episode, but then you'll get monsters which all have distinct behaviors and qualities, requiring their own tactics, different kinds of monsters are combined against the player to force him to think and act faster
>gritty medieval gothic aesthetics, crosses fast action and gunfighting with dark fantasy horror visuals, has great sound design and music to go with that, the guns boom like thunder and the monsters roar like angry oxens

Comparing Quake to King's Field feels really misguided, since they aren't the same kind of game, and are on pretty different technical levels. Looking at pic related, Quake is chock full of detail like this in all of its maps.

Quake 1 has memorable weapons, memorable monsters, and is far more than brown dungeons.

Daily reminder that Doom 2 is literally as bullet-spongy as Quake -- the amount of time it takes to kill the weakest Doom 2 enemy (Revenant) with two SSG shots is the same amount of time it takes to kill an Ogre in Quake.

Also use rockets faggot, they do double the damage of the double-barrel, where as in Doom 2 they do the same damage as the SSG.

>Quake is colorless/brown meme
Fuck off zoomer.

>Why is this game so brown?
Poor quality bait. pic related
>why do enemies take so many shots before dying?
They don't. It takes 3 seconds to fire 6 shots from the SSG, enough to kill everything but a Shambler (that's about as long as it takes to fire 3 SSG shots in Doom 2, to kill the average medium-tier enemy).
Rockets, nails and cells are also provided greatly, and they can finish off enemies even faster. You're supposed to use combos to kill enemies efficiently, which is why the weapon change is immediate.
>why is the music so forgettable?
It isn't music, as Trent Reznor himself said. It's ambient sounds which greatly improve the atmosphere.
>why was there no improvement from the Doom formula?
There was. Quake has no boring, harmless cannon fodder for 80% of its gameplay, unlike Doom. You're facing off strong opponents now, so as to make an actual challenge.
