What am I in for? Any tips before diving deep into this bad boy? What are the essential romhacks for first playthrough?

Thoughts on Earthbound?

As someone who isn't a retro gamer (despite being old enough to be), would you advise me to stick with this game if it's boring me after the first hour?

Finally got around to playing Earthbound.
Does anyone else think that aside from Magicant and the end game against Giygas, the second half of this game isn't too terribly interesting?
I feel like after Fourside the locales start to become less and less interesting and everything starts to feel a lot more brief.
Summers is short. Scaraba is short. The Deep Darkness is really short. Heck, even Poo is with you for only a brief amount of time.

Alright, I'm about to play this one for the first time ever. Should I play the US release or the patched MaternalBound Omega version?

Obligatory EarthBound post

This post will likely start a chain of sperglords arguing over whether it's good or not, but it's worth at least trying.

It's an SNES jrpg, with an emphasis on the wacky world and characters in it, and occasionally contrasting them with dark underlying tones. My advice is, don't go into it for the combat/gameplay. It's kind of basic, which is why so many anons despise it on this board. If you don't let that get to you, then you can really enjoy it in the long run, as it is certainly charming.

If you end up liking it, check out Mother 3 for the GBA (in Japan, the series is called Mother, and EarthBound is Mother 2 there, making Mother 3 it's sequel). It still hasn't received an official English translation, but the fan translation is one of the best in the world. Mother 3 is much more emotional than EarthBound and has a slightly more in-depth battle system. But again, try EarthBound first to see if it's for you.

Mother 1/EarthBound Beginnings for the NES is a strange case... it's much more primitive, and has an insane difficulty curve. It's not really HARD, but requires an insane amount of grinding. I'd say get the easy hack, which doubles your EXP and $, while halving the spawn rate.

Again, it's not for everyone, but if you at least try it, you can end up really liking the series.

It's a RPG kinda like Dragon Quest, but it takes place in modern times.
And it's super funny and quirky! At one part of the game you fight these moles and they all say they're the third strongest! LOL!
It's pretty expensive though. I paid over $600 for my copy.

Although, I have to admit, I have a general gripe against RPGs.
I also don't like Final Fantasy, for example. I gave it a chance with FFVII and couldn't finish it.
I really dislike turn based combat, I guess.

It's kinda like dragon warrior but it's set in a modern setting. It's also very funny. Apparently it didn't sell very well when it was released because the box was so big.

I'm looking to buy a copy on eBay and I keep seeing a ton of repro carts for sale for only like $50 instead of the usual $200. Anyone have any experiences with earthbound repro carts? Do they trigger the piracy thing that breaks the game?
