N64 is weird, the controller paks do have batteries and yet some games do and some do not. my gold Ocarina has a battery and yet my Goldeneye bought near launch does not. it's pretty strange.
They probably just had a ton of battery backed RAM on hand at the factories or whatever.

depended on what was available. it was more of a question of what was in the warehouse at the time than a strategic or a creative one for a company. remember: you had to physically manufacture these things in batches of thousands upon thousands, and every single developer was at the mercy of the iron clad dictatorial will of what nintendo had planned for everyone.

Here's a random smattering of my games. Ocarina of Time has a battery for some reason, it's strange that Nintendo cheaped out on their magnum opus. Perfect Dark does not, so you might think no battery has to do with it being late gen right? Well, Pilotwings 64 here doesn't either, it has cart saves, it was a launch title, and i know it's a launch version of the game because i have personally owned it since 96!
