Any thermal paper works as long as it fits. Don't buy on-brand retro Game Boy Printer paper since it's surely oxidized by now and won't work.

You can do it either with a Game Boy Printer emulator, or with a cart reader that allows you to dump your SRAM. This anon here >>6003848 dumps their saves and opens them in an emulator with a custom filter, I forget how exactly. All that said I don't think there's anything wrong with your current method as long as it works for you.
