I bought it on GOG and love the graphics and cheesy atmosphere, but can hardly figure out how to play it. Why do 90 percent of melee attacks miss? Would love some noob tips if you have any

I bought this thing on GOG and like the vibe of it but find it nearly impossible to figure out. Why do 90 percent of melee attacks miss? Why is my partly always "away on an adventure" when I load a save? Has anybody played this? am I just being a boomer
