Live-A-Live is probably my all-time favorite, but not for the mechanics. For the mechanics I play FFV, which I have beaten over 20 times by now

It's hard to say. Aside from story, art, music, etc? Perhaps the combined sense of exploration and character growth, that's what the genre excels in, moving to a new area and meeting new enemies and feeling a strong progression. If the game has customization, that makes it even better

I have only beaten IX last year and I am already having nostalgic feelings towards it. It's not even my favorite from the series, it has definite flaws and wonky storytelling at parts, but the comfy magical fairy-tale atmosphere it has going for it is incredible

Quite honestly my favorite JRPG and probably favorite game of all time too. Pretty much the only complaint I have is that it doesn't have much replayability, but I still come back to it bi-annually. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

I noticed all of it too. LAL inspirations in Undertale are fairly obvious. Now only if someone made some crossover art...

DID NOTHING WRONG

It's the best JRPG ever made, so I guess you could say that.

Live-A-Live is a really amazing game. Unique presentation and some elements like stealth or playing as the villain that were way, way ahead of its time. The only thing that stops it from bearing the title of the best RPG in history bar none is the lack of replayability. Beating it is like reading a good book: you will read it and you will love it and you will be entranced by it, but once you do you will barely want to come back to it before years later when you profoundly forget it. The novelty is stunning and it is absolutely a must - must - play, but like all novelty it wears off and there's little the game offers to make you want to immediately replay it once you beat it. It's linear with little to no options but the presentation is great enough to make you sit through it just once and love every moment of it.
