The coolest Doom shareware were the early ones sold by retailers before there was even official box art for them to use, they'd just make their own copies of the shareware and sell them. The boring ones used screenshots but the interesting ones got an artist to draw one (or repurpose other art to make it fit with Doom). Romero actually has the world's biggest collection of custom retailer Doom box art in the world.

Hey lads, any of you have any cool custom Doom retailer art? When the shareware first blew up, retailers didn't have any official box art to use. Some, the boring ones, just used screenshots and the like. The interesting ones had their own unofficial art done for the packaging. John Romero actually has a huge collection of these, the world's largest no doubt.
