I also wanted to mention that there is a certain intensity that Wolfenstein provides that previous games didn't. As I mentioned, the sound design is excellent. Each enemy callout is unique depending on the enemy type, and so you'll know exactly how many enemies you're up against, including how dangerous each one will be. Enemy AI, while extremely basic, also has infinite pathfinding. As a result, you can alert enemies at the other end of a level, and they'll never stop chasing after you. If you play the later levels, you'll understand this feeling more and more. It's quite scary to hear doors opening all around you as enemies close in on you. You have to keep your head on a swivel because you can be flanked by all directions. All the enemies are hitscan and can put you down very quickly, so each encounter is tense, but balanced due to your fast movement and the fact that your weapons are more accurate from a distance than theirs. Still, you have to be twitchy with your aim, killing the most dangerous enemies, bottlenecking and kiting them into more manageable chunks, and strafing in and out of cover to dodge their hitscan when you're overwhelmed. Enemies all have a clear animation that telegraphs their attacks, so it's possible to make calculations in the moment whether it's worth it to go toe to toe with a cluster of enemies, or rather deciding that you should retreat to cover. The low ammo pool of your 3 ranged weapons (99 cap) makes looking for secrets more worthwhile. The sound of a pushwall sliding and finding lots of goodies stirs an emotion that many players remember. There's a lot of things that just worked about Wolfenstein, and it was good enough of a step forward to get people to really enjoy "3D" shooters. It was exciting (and the first episode was free so that helped...)
