Got it for free at my last job. It was a throwaway from a largely defunct college TV station. It's a very low end PVM though, composite and S-video only, they were hanging on to all the good ones. I also bought a 5" PVM from a friendly anon from this general because I think they're cute.

That's not awful if it's in good shape (and if a 60-mile round trip is pretty standard in the area you live). Depends on what you want to play on it. There's a lot of anti-composite shittery like >>4471059 in this general, but if you're primiarily playing NES or something, they're great. I have a composite/S-video only PVM and it looks fantastic, certainly better than a consumer set. I got it for free from my last job, so I didn't spend on it, but I don't hate having it around.

You got it dude. NES looks great on a good CRT over composite.

The NES was never designed to do RGB, so RGB mods are sticking an FPGA in the console to fake it. The color palettes are wrong, just some guys idea of what they 'should' look like. The only accurate RGB palettes for the NES/FC or the Playchoice-10 and Famicom Titler ones, and even they were afterthoughts; the console was designed 100% for composite and quite literally doesn't have a defined color palette. The 'correct' colors are wholly subjective, and that's how it should be played. NES/FC composite looks great on a CRT, and will work with any CRT on earth. The AVS would get you your HD fix, and you can use a real, unmolested console for CRT usage. Just my 2 cents; If you're going to stick a small computer inside your NES to intercept PPU commands and alter them, you might as well be emulating, or using an FPGA system to do the whole job.

Such is analog video. Sticking an FPGA in my Famicom to offload PPU processes to with fake color-palettes is about as authentic as emulating to me, so I don't see the draw. Composite on a PVM is really the way to go unless you own a SHARP Titler or Playchoice-10 cabinet. I am considering a RetroUSB AVS though. I currently use real hardware with composite on a PVM (or a consumer set if I'm feeling it) or a hacked Wii with an HDMI adapter if I want to play on the HDTV.

Can someone point me to a good S-Video cable for a homebrew'd Wii? I can't tell if everything on amazon is trash and my PVM is Composite and S-Vid only

Got my first PVM, Sony 14N1UP. It's only got Composite and S-video, but it looks pretty nice. That's my AV Famicom through composite. I noticed that when the screen is displaying largely gray that I can see wavy lines in the display, would this be mitigated over S-Video? Or is it just a result of being an old set?
