>Dragon Quest's is too silly/jokey

DQ games have much, much better in game art for the monsters though. They are full of life and leap off the screen. Meanwhile Pokémons are often messes you couldn't even tell what they were exactly and which had to be redone twice.

DQ games look great, the real downer is the lack of black outlines around characters, which is a choice made so they could use more colours and have different characters use different colours.

Me too, but it's his monsters that I love the most.

I just replayed DW4 (NES), going with a different playstyle as on my first playthrough

First play
>base game
>female hero
>main Nara, Mara and Ragnar

Second play
>gameshark code to disable AI in chapter 5
>sea monster fix
>male hero
>main Cristo, Alena and Brey
It's sad that nobody's made an uncensor patch though

It's crazy how much easier the game was when controlling the party yourself. In a way the AI can often be better than the player because they decide what they do when they do it, rather than before a turn, but at the same time being able to buff/debuff and heal whenever you want largely makes up for it.
Casting Bikill at will on Alenna using the Stiletto Earrings lead to a fast mean killing machine.
I was lvl 37 for the final boss (42 in my first playthrough), and I completely forgot to change Alena's Dress of Radiance before the battle starts meaning I was unable to buff her or to cast Heal Us, and I still had the easiest time.

On the downside Cristo kinda sucks, his main pro being he gets his best sword as soon as you can get to the Medal King, so mid game he hits almost as hard as the Hero, but he sucked before that and he sucked after that. His lack of offensive spells meant I used physical attacks more in this playthrough. His other main pro was Revive but considering how little I died, it wasn't very relevant.

Unironically, the soul.
The story that manages to suck me in despite being conveyed through as little words as possible.
The unmatched monsters graphics in battle that leap of the screen.
The pacing. These games are deliberately slow, if you don't believe that just check 8 and 11 and the pacing of the dialogues and cutscenes. It was always meant to be like that, and that pacing is at the same time soothing and hypnotizing. The musics help sucking you in as well.
Balancing is exceptionally well crafted. The 4 NES games manage to always have the right amount of challenge, starting with 5 they started to fail with that in places though. The amount of exp and gold you gain is always just right, in a way that forces the player to make decisions, and the right ones, both in and out of battles.
There is often the right amount of exploration and freedom as well.

DQ7 is probably the worst of the series, it's a slog, but the load times are fine.

4 remake is in Japanese only and afaik the DS version is pretty much identical. Personally I'd recommend playing the original first if you haven't
