I'd say that, on a sale, the Backbone One is worth it for sure, it clearly has much higher built quality than its competitors, with the only exception I'm aware of being the Razer Kishi V2, which in many ways feels inspired by the Backbone One aswell. I can definitely get what you mean with the whole downsizing, the less extra devices with their own screens on it the better I think, less to manage.

Having a feature like that on your smartphone is definitely helpful in making the experience a lot more seamless, hopefully it really doesn't hurt the USB-C port and we're just worrying in vain, I suppose it doesn't due to how well built it is, but we never know for sure. One more advantage of this method over a dedicated handheld is if you like playing actual mobile Android/iOS titles too.
