I don't think it was an attempt at anything, they probably just did it as a shortening of the name like Famicom or Pokemon.
Also kek, in Haunted Castle, The Creature is even more obviously Universal's version. You can get figures of The Creature licenced from Universal made either by NECA and Jada Toys that even include the chains.
