Yeah, but that's the thing: it's budget and Xenogear's budget both went to help finish Final Fantasy VIII, which _still_ managed to fail one of the basic tenants of storytelling: give the antagonist a reason for being a villain.

I'm serious. Go back through the game (if you dare!) and try to search for any reason at all for any of the bullshit Ultimecia does. You won't find any motivation whatsoever. The game is literally that much of an abysmal failure at producing anything of substance.

I've thought this ever since I first played the two. What little room there was for a sequel was filled in nicely by RD. When I play Chrono Trigger DS, I just ignore the extras entirely (I do wonder though if the bit with Dalton couldn't somehow be salvaged, though).
