I'm sorry but Butouden 3 > Butouden 2.
Story mode doesn't matter.

>Clunky crap.
What's clunky about it? The game can get pretty hectic, especially with the turbo mode.

Buyu Retsuden's controls are not as good as Butoden 2 or 3, but they're still serviceable, and makes up with having a nice roster of characters including the likes of Ginew and Krillin which weren't on the SNES games.
Butoden 3's lack of story mode is infamous, but honestly that's not the biggest complaint I have about it, my main problem with Butoden 3 is some of the nerfs they did, although they also improved some stuff, in some regards makes gameplay even faster than on Butoden 2.
Another complaint is the few stages (just 4, with many recolors). But as a VS fighting game it still works pretty well, I played it a bunch.

I know opinions tend to be divisive with some DBZ games, a lot of people swear this thing that "all DBZ fighting games were bad until the PS2!" which I disagree wholeheartedly with. I can sort of see how Butoden games can seem "clunky" or slow at first, but when you learn how to actually play the games (and even better, if you have friends who also know how to play the games), they are honestly very unique and live up to the DBZ spirit of crazy fights.

Like any fighting game, it's better if you play with another human being. And I'm sure you can find people to play online, I remember there being a discord for DBZ netplay, Butoden 2 included, probably some people play 3 too.
otherwise, they're still fun to play alone, especially butoden 2 due to the story mode, which has 4 difficulty settings, and multiple endings, depending on how you perform.
Butoden 3 only has a vs CPU mode, no arcade or story mode at all, so that one is definitely best enjoyed playing with other people. You can also select any of the 4 difficulty settings for the vs CPU mode.

>all 4 of them are honestly kind of shite when trying to play it as a fighting game.
Honestly I think at least Butoden 2 and 3 are some of the best non-arcade fighting games of 4th gen (others including Gundam W Endless Duel or the TMNT fighting game). I agree with >>5568770, you have to get used to the game system and actually get to play against someone who's also good at it. I've had a lot of fun hours playing them with a friend, really heated battles, and completely unique, the split screen and dashing mechanic offer something that Capcom or SNK games don't have.
I know Super Butoden 2 is still played by some japanese people, there's some tournament videos on Niconico. In the west probably your best bet is to play online against latinamericans who mastered the games like the japanese.
If you don't care about VS mode or don't have friends who are interested in getting good at them, then I'd say the Butoden games are still worth playing for the comfy art style, god-tier soundtrack and in the case of Butoden 2, the story mode, which even warrants replayability. Butoden 3's infamous lack of story mode and very few stages make it seem like an unfinished game, but all in all, the gameplay is mostly an improvement upon Butoden 2 (except for a few nerfs).

>sluggish
To me they're fairly swift, especially with the dash function
>bad graphics
Really? I think they're rather nice looking.
Anyway, I'm mostly talking about Super Butoden 2 and 3.
Butoden 1 and Shin Butoden aren't as good.

ikr.
I don't mind the roster as much as other people, and even though it's the same basic engine as SB2, some adjustments were made that I think make it a bit more fluid, but it's the lack of story mode what ultimately makes it look so barebones.
I still like this game though, and kind of understand it was rushed to hell, these games were made with tight as fuck deadlines to match what was going on in the TV series. I think Butoden 3 was the first game to ever have any Boo saga characters, even if it's just ones from the very beginning.
