>be me
>save up for over 2 years for the perfect CRT
>finally a rare 24" Sony BVM appears
>geometry is good
>not too many hours on it
>bidding war makes it crazy expensive but I win
>shipping is crazy expensive but it arrives undamaged
>after years of waiting finally have it in my room and set up with component cables
>color gradients are so sharp you can see where one color changes to the next
>looks weird and after reading up on shaders and tweaking, putting them side by side it looks the same, BVM doesn't have better blacks, brightness, or motion clarity
>BVM doesn't have the same glowing aesthetic as my dad's old TV

So, I have a graveyard of CRT's in front of an old garage. The only thing good out of some of them might be some tubes. If they didn't get scratched when they were thrown there. *Obviously the bulk of them weren't anything great or functional. I'm related to some scrappers who are using that garage to make some side money. Besides I've gotten in there and saved a few old motherboards, joysticks and some other nice things they were going to either let rot or be burned. Which works out great because I wouldn't have had access to it with out their scavenging.

It's not supposed to look like a consumer CRT. It's supposed to be similar to a BVM with less shit colors.

It's nothing remotely like playing on a consumer SDTV, but it is like playing on a gross broadcast meme monitor.

I have a PVM and fell for the meme too, seriously it is so razor sharp I might as well be playing on an LCD with scanline.png over my game.

What was nice about the everyday TVs we grew up with is the shadowmasks gave some texture and grit to the picture which "tricks" the eye into thinking there is more detail in the pixels when there is not. Trinitron aperture grills still have some of that nice toothy detail but the PVMs and BVMs are so well defined they almost look like PC monitors.

Compare these two images, i'll take the one on the left anyday, while technically "inferior", the glow from the phosphor is more realistic and the fire in the letters actually looks like real fire instead of a pixellated mess.

Different CRTs display things differently and which ones look better is a matter of personal preference.
