It really doesn't matter, they all stand alone. The thing is they're laden with references and call outs so if you play in order you get a deeper grasp on the universe. Not that it's necessary though

just as an example, a town in 4 has a statue dedicated to The Heroine who in the past saved the world. Said heroine is Alys from PS1 so if you played PS1 you think of hey that's nice. I liked her.

Phantasy Star is really tough, uh? Just started the game and...

according to the Geena Davis institute, whenever about 17% of the people in a given space or scene are women, men will think its 50/50. any more than 17%, and the guys start thinking they are a minority.

people aren't used to seeing 50/50 male to female ratios in media. which is weird, because classrooms are usually 50/50...

I am pretty sure female characters are rare in retro games, because except for rpgs and fighting games, you never see them. and, by rare, I mean fewer than 15%. if you could count up every female character, background sprite, and NPC in every game from 1977 to 1998, I would be SHOCKED if there were 25% female.

How many classic games allow you to play as a female character, either as standard or via an option at the start.

With RPGs, try to keep it to instances where the character you create is a "character" in their own right, like how Darklands addresses your PC as "you," with the gender affecting people's treatment of you.
