There are some zandronum "vanilla" servers, you can make your own vanilla server also and people will join you if you make it public. Or you can make a free zan vanilla server at allfearthesentinel.net, just follow the rules.

Tell them to install doomseeker even if you guys still want to use odamex, it will make it way easier for you guys specially if you aren't used to setting up server-client stuff. You can also play Chocolate Doom multiplayer with Doomseeker, it's way more vanilla that both bare Zandronum and/or Odamex.

Hope you know about port forwarding also, if not, go read something about it.
