It really depends how you define character creator, but I think early CRPG's like Ultima were the first games where you rolled your character stats and thus made your own unique character, but even those were based on D&D.

I like and respect what he did for gaming, but god damn can Garriott's attitude when he's talking about his achievements make him come off as kind of a cunt to me. Like whenever his earlier games are mentioned he likes to stealthily shit all over Wizardry because he's so smug over being more successful in the long run.

Carmack of course. His influence to all modern games can barely be understated.

Real question: does anyone compare to the real master? Carmack comes close, but his legacy wouldn't exist without him.
