He is saying these retrofag "celebs" that managed to get a few followers talk about certain things, that then are wanted by their mindless followers driving increased prices and scarcity of said item.

To give an off /vr/ topic example so people don't bitch about a subject they pretend to know(most people know shit about VR, let us be honest, they just fake it).

Wil Wheaton hosts that youtube series 'Tabletop' about tabletop gaming. When a game is featured on there and it is out of print, values go through the roof for used/new copies. If the game is in print the publisher has to put the manufacturers into overdrive to keep with demand.

Pic related. The game started selling so many extra copies that the publisher couldn't put games in Amazons warehouse fast enough (among other retailers), in December it caused a small plunge because the 100+ extra sales a month was not planned for and the publisher actually had to start another production run a few months earlier than expected to keep up with demand.

Fury of Dracula went from being OOP and worth $40-50 at first, to now being worth $95 after the episode on Tabletop aired.

This is what OP is trying to state, but with VR and related shit to VR.
