Might have something to do with the fact rpg's didn't become all that popular until later in the 80's when spectrum was already dead / in rapid decline.

Lords of Midnight and the sequel Doomdark's Revenge were sort of RPG-ish, I guess, though they were more like strategy games.

And yes there were literally thousands of games and it WAS a popular gaming machine but the general quality wasn't much better than Atari 2600. Lots of crap shovelware.
