i don't get why this game is shat on so much, it's really fun for a stoic shmup and i'm enjoying it more than gradius 5 and other ps2 horis.

You know how fighter jets have names like "F-22", bombers have names like "B-17", and whatnot? The basic spacecraft in that series are known as "round cockpit crafts", so they all have designations like "R-19" (so they're collectively known as "R-types"). Later games also have other lines of spacecrafts.

It has some great moments and I think it's at least worth credit feeding to see the different endings. Working to unlock different ships can be an enjoyable task in and of itself, but some of the requirements will make you roll your eyes. Unlocking ships in general though is a highly rewarding activity, and the amount of extraneous fluff text and lore do their job to draw you into the game.

Some of the stages are a little too slow (with slowdown, too) and some checkpoints are spaced out way too far (looking at you Gomander fight), but the game has some truly great moments in it. I am really hoping R-Type Final2 exceeds the first game in every way.

man, Delta only average? Insanity.
Delta fixes the series' biggest problem, the 'sluggish' speed of the ship on death. Adding in manual speed makes the game feel far better.

It is a slow-paced game but I think it's slow-pace done right. As you note, it's because the stage designs are pretty good. Stage 5/6 are some of the best.

I kinda like R-Type Final casually but man it's a clunker. Talk about 'sluggish' stages. With like 1-checkpoint per stage sometimes; it's just too much.
