>n64 cartridges were expensive
Basically this is the real answer. Also, fighting games during 5th gen were already waning out, the Mortal Kombat craze started to die, Street Fighter wasn't ever as popular again after Alpha 2, and still the Alpha series wasn't as popular as SFII and all its incarnations, and SNK fighters were mostly popular only in Japan and south america. Companies like Capcon and SNK figured they'd rather port for CD systems since it was cheaper.
I agree it's a missed opportunity due to the 6 button pad though. At least Killer Instinct Gold is there.
>also, have you noticed that most people remember fondly RARE games but not japanese ones on it?
N64 was decidedly a weird system, and most of its early support came from western developers/published like Midway and Acclaim. That said, the system wasn't a failure in Japan, it got slightly outsold by Saturn in terms of hardware, but it sold more software, some of which are the best selling games of the generation.
Also, although more on the "hidden gem" side (at least in normie world), japanese N64 games like Mystical Ninja or Mischief Makers are beloved within N64 enthusiasts.

>Nintendo didn’t want 2D games on the system
Don't think that's the real case, since Nintendo themselves did 2D games (Yoshi's Story), and some early N64 games in Japan, like Wonder Project J2, were 2D.
But yes, given that the system's forte was 3D, and that 3D is what most people expected out of 5th gen, and that producing carts was expensive, most developers/published were more encouraged to make 3D games if they were going to invest on N64 development.

Wonder Project J2 is the best game on the N64.

It's incredible how rent free the PS1 is in the minds of Sonyboys.
It's also funny to see Sonyboys pretending the PS1 was good at 2D when it was mediocre (and often bad). Saturn was the real 2D machine.
N64: 3D
Saturn: 2D
PS: FMV
Anyway, 5th gen console warriors are the worst part of /vr/. Cut off should have been 1993, really. 4th gen console wars are also kind of shitty but at least no sonyboys.

Yeah at the end of the day I think all 5th gen consoles could do very good 2D, when the devs wanted. I used to think N64 just wasn't capable of 2D at all, then I started seeing some 2D games on it and I was proven wrong. Especially Wonder Project J2, that game is gorgeous with great 2D animations.
It's just that 2D wasn't popular at the time of 5th gen, which is why you end up with a lot of blocky early 3D games for the most part.

Did Mischief Makers really push the cart's memory? I know the game was being developed before the N64 launched, it started development around 1995 so the N64 was still largely unknown territory for devs, but I never got the impression that game pushed the limits, it has some big sprites and runs at 60fps though, so maybe it does.

Actually the N64 can do some really nice 2D, but most publishers just weren't interested, probably saw it as a missed opportunity since 3D gaming was the new thing at the moment, and people saw 2D as old and undesirable, when you read magazine reviews from back then, reviewers would just put a few points down on the score, just because the game was 2D.

>I love older sprites-based games
You should try Wonder Project J2 on the Nintendo 64 OP.
>And no, I didn't come to this board by accident.
Yes, it was actually an accident. Console warriors are ridiculed here, don't waste your time on a slow board like this, /v/ is better for that kind of thing.

It has other kind of games than those you mentioned, you just have to look around and don't stop at "top 10 N64 games" from IGN and such.
