It's pretty cool; you'll want a color one, though, or games like Fire Emblem are really hard (enemies have the same luminance as allies and are differentiated by color only).

That's one of the unfortunate artifacts of NES composite video. It happens noticeably in red colours too. I've got a pic somewhere, I'll hunt for it.

Lots, but a lot of it just comes with time.

Probably the most helpful thing for my understanding was playing with linux video modelines and manually manipulating them, while usong wikipedia and the excellent 'cvt' program as references. Once you understand video timings and pixel clocks and such, it all kind of falls into place. If you ask a question I can try to help.

Also, I forget where I found it but the original NTSC System M specification from the 1940s is pretty useful for understanding black and white analog video. I'd give it a read if you can find it. It's a PDF book scan; I think I found it on the New York Public Library's catalog or something.
