Softmodding is modifying the software/OS of the system to allow you to run unauthorized third party programs and the like that would usually be prevented and blocked.

Homebrew is said software that you can run. 240p Test Suite is a homebrew program you can run on a softmodded Wii. The various third party emulators(so, non-Virtual Console) such as Retroarch Wii and Genesis Plus GX are homebrew as well.

The old standard was a non-SDHC card as some programs and exploits had problems with those. I don't know whether that still stands
I've been using a 1GB SanDisk microSD in an adapter for god knows how many years, and it's never failed me once.
