Graphics audience really disliked how the characters went from the more "realistic" approach FF7('s cutscenes) and FF8 were taking and were instantly dismissive of the entire game for that alone.
Everyone, when playing, absolutely hated that:
>map wandering
>freeze frame
>swirling transition
>black screen
>music begins
>random introduction cinematic loads stage and characters ranging from 4-8 seconds
>ATB begins loading after stage is set
>characters takes action
takes at least 28 seconds EVERY. SINGLE. BATTLE.
