Why is dialogue in JRPGs so terribly written ?

In SNES and NES games the dialogue is usually terrible even though it's just small text that weighs little and adds a lot more atmosphere to the games. Some games like Lunar managed to give a life to the world by making NPCs that didn't speak like robots and whose dialog changed depending on your progression in the story, it's probably a lot easier and less time-consuming than adding a new spell, so why didn't they do it ?

Hey guys, I've got some stuff to put here before I throw it on ebay.

N64- Comes with all cables, 3rd party controller and a beater copy of Beetle Adventure Racing. Works well but in pretty average shape.
Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening + Nintendo Power guide
Zelda Oracle of Ages
Zelda Oracle of Seasons
Metroid Zero Mission + Nintendo Power guide
Might have more GB + GBA games if you're looking for any in particular

PS1 (All black label)
Silent Hill 1 + Prima guide
Dino Crisis 1 + Prima guide
Tenchu
Gekioh: Shooting King- single scratch from lens, I'll see if I can get it buffed out
Fear Effect
Resident Evil Director's Cut (NOT Greatest Hits, double-case)
Resident Evil 2 (double-case)
Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (2-disc)
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear VR Missions
Doom (Greatest Hits)

Box of Junk:
PS1 phat- button sticks and has trouble reading discs
PS2 slim- works but scratches discs
Shenmue- Missing disc 1
SNES Mouse- pad is cracked, wire has tape on it, untested :/
Various controllers- 1 Genesis, a few PS2 and PS1, all kinda shitty

These two aren't technically retro but I figure someone might want them.

GBA SP Classic NES Edition- Complete in box with all paperwork, system is mint, box is mint except for some peeling on a side flap where the sticker was removed
GBA Micro 20th Anniversary Famicom Edition- Complete in box with all paperwork, system and box are super fresh.

I'm really reluctant to sell these, so I apologize if the price sounds high but I'd like $100 for the SP, $150 for the Micro or $200 for both. For everything else, just send me a reasonable offer. Not really looking for trades at the moment.

I use 91% isopropyl alcohol on all contacts.

For sharpie:
-First I try a soaked qtip in isopropyl. If the sharpie is small and light, this works
-Second, Magic Eraser it
-Both methods will leave permanent change in the texture to the cartridge if done harshly or over a large area

For stickers
-Near the qtips in the grocery store are these circular pads used to remove makeup. They are just soft cotton. Get those
-Drip a drop or two of goo-be-gone on them and softly rub it into the sticker.
-For large stickers, slowly work the goo-be-gone over the whole sticker.
-DO NOT let goo-be-gone touch the actual game stickers, or it will dissolve the glue of those too.
-Remove the leftover goo-be-gone with a few drops of isopropyl and the same cotton wipes.
