If you want to go through the whole series, start with Silent Hill 1. It introduces a recurring plotline that is covered by some of the games.
Silent Hill 2 is also good to start with, it is not a part of the recurring "main" plotline and is an excellent stand-alone title. If you liked it you might want to go back to SH1 though before continuing on, since SH3 carries on with that first game's story.
Emulation is fine for SH1, just make sure it's a good emulator that keeps the dithering. You want it looking like the left pic, not the right.
For SH2, the PC port is probably better than PS2 emulation. See this: http://www.enhanced.townofsilenthill.com/SH2/
Really the best order is just release order. SH1, SH2, SH3, SH4 The Room, and then whatever came after that.

5th gen consoles couldn't do real 32 bit color rendering, so they rendered in 16 bit colors and faked the missing colors through algorithm generated dithering

What is the best way to emulate PS1 games with authentic graphic? You know, something similar to what you can get from real console. Bonus points for nice CRT filter.

>Just buy it on PS3, its only $6!
The dithering effect is really obnoxious, shoulda just emulated it...

I mentioned 1920X1080 because that's what most people have nowadays, gpuBladeSoft supports pretty much any resolution. The game just looks great in widescreen, really.

It's up to you but I prefer native myself, looks a lot better in motion. BladeSoft turns into a slideshow if you crank it up though, you'll need Pete's OpenGL in that case. Keep in mind the dithering doesn't work with the latter.

Just set it to 2/medium. I'm not a fan of bloom either but it looks surprisingly good in SH, specially in the Otherworld sequences. Noise on the other hand makes bright areas a lot spookier.

I wish I still had the screenshots I took for /emugen/, we went all the way to the doghouse in order to take a HD 'there's no dog around' one. Just try it for yourself, looks great.

Fine faggot. You want proof? Here you go.

Left is how a 3D game looks on the PS3 emulator. Tight is how it should look.

It took shortcuts with 3D since the GPU is not a true 3D GPU. It's covered here:

I emulate everything cause I can't afford old games. 3D games emulation with HD filters make PS1 games look like they are early PS2 games.

correct the point was to show the difference between polygon resolutions, not a difference between emulators

>Silent Hill

This is one of those games I recommend using on a real console with a real crt.

You can't entirely properly replicate it right now. PCSXR + ePSXe remove the dithering. The dithering adds shading to the game. Normally the dithering is blurred. Now without it, the game's color palette is much lighter and paler. This was never intended. There tends to be other problems as well.

You need to run the game at a multiple of 240p for all the flashlight effects to work properly.

That's emulated, though. I can't recall if this is the case on that particular game, but many 3D PS1 games have dithering out the ass, making them look nowhere near that clean. Boot up Silent Hill with a software renderer or with an emulator like Xebra, and compare it to Pete's plugins. You'll see what I mean.

So I more or less know where /vr/ stands in regards to filters and shit. However, what do you all think of hi-res hardware rendering in emulators? Do you like the sharper, clearer visuals, or do you prefer the more faithful, super low-res look?
