I think that quasi-realism like in Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life is a great way to do an FPS, you can have these partial locales and environments which are detailed and fairly believable, but you then build more abstract elements around it, sci-fi or fantasy theming allowing you to make excuses for less believable environments (to a point).

Like, Half-Life has environments which are completely believable, but it's also loaded with environments and setpieces which, as commonly joked about, are complete and utter OSHA nightmares (pic related being one of my favorites, for how retardedly unsafe and illegal this would be IRL). Likewise for Duke Nukem 3D.
These two games go for realism, for the purpose of detail and immersion, but they never go so hard for realism as to sacrifice fun and exploration.
