While it is playable without the specialized controllers, I feel some games rely on their unique control schemes for most of their fun. DDR is completely playable with the controller, but I feel the experience is much better with a dance pad. Light gun games are fine and still enjoyable in MAME with mouse controls, but I personally enjoy them a lot more with a well calibrated light gun. Some sega games a fine on their own, but they become so much more thrilling with the hydraulics. The Samba De Amigo games has a charm with the maracas.

I remember back in the day Sonic Team was live-streaming their offices back then (I believe it was during the development of Sonic Adventure 2 and PSO) and they played the Samba De Amigo soundtrack on loop throughout the broadcast. (I didn't catch them doing much interesting, it was just a constant live view of the office)
