This thread is like an all-nighter at Richard Simmons' house.

In Enter The Gecko, Gex says "12 years of full house" even though Full house only ran for 8 years. Even if you count the time from its end to when this game was made, it hadn't even been 11 years. The closest to 12 is the EU N64 version which is just a few months short of 12 but the quote had been around since the NA PSX version.

Who the fuck is the target audience for these games? You've got level themes that seem aimed at children, quotes that reference older TV or obscure celebrity shit, and then immature sex jokes. It's like they couldn't figure who would buy this so they just aimed for everyone.

This gecko right here sold more than 16 million.

Accordingly to Wikipedia this shit here "sold a combined total of over 15 million copies for all platforms", with the third game alone "shipping over 6 million copies".

The games had a good marketing, but they weren't hyped. Games like God of War and Halo sold way less on their first iterations and were hyped as the greatest thing ever and went on to become actual gaming juggernauts (altought I believe this will not last forever), while Gex was just forgotten.
And I understand why. It's just another mascot platformer. And the "TV/Movie worlds" trope is really tired. We had Gex, Garfield Caught in The Act, the two Bug! games, Conker, Cool Spot...

who the fuck is the intended audience for this series? Most of the references are to stuff that no kid at the time would recognize, but the gameplay and visuals are all aimed towards kids, and on top of all that there's a ton of corny sex jokes that only a 13 year old would find funny.

Was Gex the most successful of the mid-90s platformer mascot imitator phase? He had loads of sequels and is still remembered fondly to this day.

Toshinden was never good, even though I enjoy the third game where you have dozens of random characters like Michal Jackson and Jason Voorhees.

But what happens is that not every series last. That happens mainly with series that got surpassed by other games or made redundant thanks to gamers taste changing. And some that sold well just 'cause they were hyped.
We have many games that sold millions but now are completely forgotten, like Toshinden, Gex, Croc, Double Dragon, Driver, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Streets of Rage and almost every classic Sega game. In 20 years we possibly will still have Zelda, but Halo will be forgotten. We can see it happening right now, not only with Halo but also with Soul Calibur. Who gives a fuck about Soul Calibur nowadays?
Gex and Croc sold well because they filled the mascot platformers void on a console that didn't have Mario. But now they would be redundant.
Toshinden sold well as it was one of the first Playstation games and was a Street Fighter wannabe in 3D, 3 years before an actual Street Fighter in 3D, SF EX.
I don't believe that, let's say, God of War will last for more 10 years. The games were hyped, but God of War 3, the series best selling game, sold less than 5 million. That's less than Driver, Spyro, Crash or Warzone 2100, all on the original Playstation. God of War 2 sold less than PS Frogger. And that's way less than Donkey Kong 64, a game universally bashed, or Zumba Fitness and Carnival Games, both Wii shovelware.

What would make Toshinden relevant among so many other games when they bring nothing new to the table?

Was Gex ever actually popular? I mean, the guy got a bunch of sequels, so he must have had some fanbase.

It's just a generic cartoon "with attitude".

Now that you're older, do you think you would understand every obscure pop culture gex reference?
