I hated EWJ for the confusing platforming. But one of my early faps was to Princess Whats-Her-Name, so it's got nostalgia-value for that alone.

it wasn't a "bad" game, but it certainly wasn't a good one either. The only good things about EWJ are the music and Princess Whats-Her-Name.

It is awesome. Just not in the gameplay/level design department.

While EWJ1 is best on Genesis (Sega CD actually), I find 2 to be best on SNES. I find the controls to be the best out of all versions, and the graphics and music are top notch, of course the music is better on PS1/Saturn version, but the graphics, while technically the 32-bit version has more impressive stuff, I think the art direction and the polish of the SNES version is better. Genesis looks good too, but SNES version exploits the color treat of SNES, and also has, I think, the best art direction decisions (night Anything But Tangerines on SNES looks a lot more moody than the sunset Genesis one, but that's subjective).
I don't have the SNES game anymore, only the Saturn version, and I must say I miss the SNES one.
Saturn version is also lacking the trick to make the cows say "well done" in different pitch by pressing buttons.
By the way, even if I think the 32-bit version is kind of shoddy, it's still got some nice offers, mostly the music, but also the backgrounds are nice sometimes. Avoid the PS version because the backgrounds lack parallax effects that the Saturn version has.

Never played it, I assume it's the same as the PS1 version. Probably doesn't have the nice parallax effects of the Saturn version but who knows.
I know it is missing a level though, so I wouldn't recommend it over other versions.

I think the game's tone and art direction carry it over its questionable design.
EWJ's gameplay is not bad, but it feels a bit wonky. Hit detection always seemed off to me, and controls are a bit slippery/floaty, however it's still fun to play, but mostly because the sprites animation, the music, and the whole world around Jim is full of charisma and humor.
Because of that, I didn't mind the different mix of gameplay styles in EWJ2.

Anyway, I love both of them.
