OP here, I'm not even British. I just thought the gaudy clashing colors on black looked kinda neat. An interesting change from the DOS cyan & magenta and washed-out C64 brown games I remember playing when I was little.
Plus it's just plain fascinating seeing what some people have been able to achieve on such weak and primitive hardware:
