China has had a bigger influence on the West than Japan too, case in point, the American fighting game based on Chinese films, not Japanese ones because Japan never made a splash in film until The Ring in the 00s, and even Japan ripped their concept of ninjas off from Chinese films.

I find Mortal Kombat to be the ultimate 90's child series. It just was, it was everything we loved in one package.

No mention of Mortal Kombat eh. Martial arts and especially ninja obsession was still a very real thing in the 90s. Edginess was in, and MK was probably the most controversial game of the decade in that regard. Ninjas + shock value = pretty 90s.....I mean you also have little things, like Scorpion being pretty similar to Ghost Rider, a character popular in the edgy anti hero era of the 90s, and Kano's design being loosely inspired by Terminator, which T2 was a pretty big deal
