Mario hacks from the 90s are just other games with a swapped Mario sprite (sometimes straight out of SMB3, sometimes a mix of the original game's character sprite with a Mario head and other bizarre things like that).
So yeah, you could say "but then just play the original games instead of the mario hacks", yeah yeah but SOUL. Also some of these games were japan-only games that we wouldn't have played if it wasn't for the mario hacks back in the 90s. Of course I've played the original games later with emulators, but I'll always have fond memories of the mariohacks and I still prefer to play those from time to time.
