In defense of the DS, it does have some pretty good Castlevania games, and Mario Kart DS is easily better than Super Circuit imo, even without the added online. Plus it had Animal Crossing.

I agree that the GBA is fantastic though. The Sonic Advance series, Nigthmare in Dreamland, Crash: The Huge Adventure, Wario Land 4, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Crazy Taxi: Catch a Ride, SEGA Arcade Gallery are among my favorites. The first WarioWare game is pretty fun too. I have a V90 but I've long debated getting myself pic related since it's closer to the AGB-001.

Just give it a few years

I don't think a hard cap is necessary, rather outside of /vr/ gaming will probably end up being divided by decades, so 80's gaming, 90's gaming (what most people consider retro at this point), 2000's gaming etc. The 2000's are still somewhat fresh but soon they will start coming out with 2000's-themed magazines and stuff. It's only a matter of time

GBA is pretty easy to emulate, you could buy one of the cheap off brand ones or just go for PowKiddy's A30 or V90 handhelds which only go for like $40.

The Game Boy line are also excellent systems to start with. Very easy to emulate, and best of all there are plenty of handhelds that can accurately emulate them nowadays.

There are some 3D games worth checking out, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Crazy Taxi: Catch A Ride, and Need for Speed Underground 2 (I think) are all pretty solid. As usual anything by SEGA is a slam dunk, so all of the Sonic games, Puyo Puyo Fever, Gunstar Super Heroes, SEGA Arcade Gallery, etc. Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance is also very fun. For first party games I think Yoshi's Island got the best port, then there's Nightmare in Dreamland and Wario Land 4. I personally like Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, but I've been told it's average. I guess ymmv on that one. Scurge: Hive and Banjo: Grunty's Revenge are good if you want a fun top down action platformer.

I play them on retro emulation handhelds, would be great to own something like pic related at some point but thankfully since most of the games are easy to emulate I can get away with a cheap $30 fake Game Boy/fake Switch for all of my GBA games.
