Dark Souls is famous BECAUSE it's that shining beacon in the darkenss of bleh, though.
I loved GTAV, but I've zero desire to ever play it again.
I'm on my 3rd playthrough of FFV right now. It's great. Stupidly simple yet so full of spirit. The enemy sprites on RGB are particularly beautiful. Backgrounds are a bit simple but that at least helps the sprites pop out a bit.
Simple 30 second song loops that should, by nature, bore me after the first two loops.
They don't wear.
The only way you make shit like this is if you have soul. And all of the consoles from the late-80s through to the PS3 generation have this. Western included. You look at Metroid Prime. The visuals are mostly Western. And it's got soul.
Hot Pursuit 2 is still awesome shit despite being ancient by almost all standards. It's got far more soul than the 2010 HP game.
I'm not trying to bash on Western stuff.

And PC itself is fine. On PC. But it leaked out. Not because it's better, but because the technology made it easier to be lazy.
And I have to see constant PC mustard posts as if they don't bear responsibility for retro gaming's ills.
Konami gave up gaming because "who gives a shit, pachinko is a better income for us". We'll never get a proper Castlevania collection because people think PUBG is a fucking game and not a way to suck their finances disguised as a game.
And we get shat on for pirating and emulating when our hobby is composed of price gouging.
